Shakespeare Timeline

1564 ~ Shakespeare born in Stratford Upon Avon. Date of birth is unknown, but assumed to be April 23. 

1571 ~ Shakespeare started grammar school at 7.

1582 ~ Shakespeare, at 18, marries Anne Hathaway (26) on November 27.

1583 ~ Shakespeare's first child Susana was born on May 26, 5 months after the wedding (she lived to be 66).

1585 February 2 ~ Shakespeare's twins Judith and Hamnet are born (Hamnet dies at 11, while Judith lived to 77).

1585-1592 ~ Shakespeare left his family in Stratford to join a company of actors as a performer as well as a playwright. 

1589-1590 ~ Shakespeare is believed to have written Henry VI Part One in this year.

1590-1591 ~ Shakespeare is believed to have written Henry VI Part Two and Henry VI Part III.

1592 ~ Shakespeare received criticism for lacking in originality as he borrowed ideas for his plays. Theatres in London close because of the plague.

1592-1593 ~ Shakespeare is thought to have written the poem Venus and Adonis and the plays Richard III and The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

1592-1594 ~ The Comedy of Errors written.

1593 ~ Shakespeare wrote his first sonnet out of 154.

1593-1594 ~ The Rape of Lucrece, Titus Andronicus and The Taming of the Shrew were believed to be written at this time.

1594-1595 ~ Shakespeare wrote Love Labour's Lost.

1594-1596 ~ King John and Romeo and Juliet is believed to have been written.

1596 ~ The Merry Wives of Windsor was written.

1596-1597 ~ The Merchant of Venice and Henry IV Part One were written.

1598 ~ Henry IV Part Two is written, and Shakespeare confirms his reputation as an actor by performing in Every Man in his Humour by Ben Jonson.

1598-1599 ~ Much Ado About Nothing is written, and the Globe Theatre is built.

1599 September 21 ~ Julius Caesar is performed at Globe Theatre for the first time.

1600-1601 ~ It is believed that Shakespeare wrote Hamlet at this time.

1601 ~ The Phoenix and the Turtle, a narrative poem, was written.

1601-1602 ~ Twelfth Night, Alls Well That Ends Well, and Troilus and Cressida are written.

1603 ~ A Midsummer Night's Dream is performed before Queen Elizabeth, who dies later in the same year. King James VI of Scotland becomes King James I of England grants The Chamberlain's Men permission to perform. In return, The Chamberlain's Men renamed themselves The King's Men to honour the king. The group quickly became a favourite with the new king. As You Like It is performed for King James by the King's Men. Shakespeare's last recorded performance was in Sejanus by Ben Jonson.

1604 ~ Measure for Measure is believed to have been written, and later performed at King James I Court.

1605 ~ The Merchant of Venice is performed at King James I Court twice. King Lear and Macbeth are believed to be written in this year. Macbeth's Scottish setting and portrayal of Malcolm were intended as a celebration and honouring of King James I's Scottish ancestry.

1606 ~ Anthony and Cleopatra is believed to have been written.

1607-1608 ~ Timon of Athens, Pericles and Coriolanus are written.

1608 ~ The King's Men take on a 21 year lease of the Blackfiars Theatre.

1608-1610 ~ Due to the return of the plague all playhouses and theatres are forced to close.

1609-1610 ~ Cymbeline is thought to have been composed.

1610-1611 ~ The Winter's Tale is written.

1611 ~ The Tempest was written.

1612-1613 ~ Shakespeare is thought to have written Cardenio which was lost.

1613 ~ The Globe Theatre burns down.

1614 ~ The Globe Theatre re-opens.

1616 April 23 ~ William Shakespeare dies.
